Sensory Walk

Monageer Grotto’s Sensory Path was officially opened in June 2018, following three years of work by the volunteers. As the area took shape it became a labour of love for all those involved, and the support received from the whole community was immense.

The therapeutic benefits of stimulating the senses has long been recognised but it is only in recent years that sensory gardens have become popular. Adults and children alike can benefit from this as sensory stimulation is good for mental health, and the resource is especially beneficial to people with any kind of sensory issue. Our path is designed to stimulate the five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. SIGHT is the easiest one to achieve as you can see the various colours, forms and shapes along the path A sense of SMELL is achieved with all the scented flowers and herbs TOUCH is accommodated with the use of various materials and tactile leaves etc. The herbs and strawberries stimulate the sense of TASTE. One can hear the SOUND of the grasses rustling, the birds singing, and the musical tones of the wind chimes and the sound wall.

In 2022 a new section of path was added making this a looped accessible walk.  The additional section of path brings the visitor from the picnic area back to the car park via the Butterfly Border.
